Old North Church

The famous “One if by land, two if by sea” signal is said to have originated at Old North Church (officially, Christ Church in the City of Boston, Massachusetts), which is located at 193 Salem Street in Boston‘s North End. The signal related to Paul Revere’s midnight ride on April 18th, 1775. The Battles of Lexington and Concord came before this in the American Revolution. The church is the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. It was completed in 1723. It is a National Historic Landmark and is believed to be Boston’s oldest congregation. Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, reportedly remarked that a portrait of George Washington within the church house was the best depiction of the president he’d seen.

Christopher Wren, the British architect who rebuilt London after the Great Fire, created the Old North Church in 1723. Timothy Cutler became the founding Rector of Yale College after serving as the third rector from 1719 to 1722. Jason Haven was called to be a pastor, but the congregations of Dedham’s First Church and Dedham Parish persuaded him to stay.

The Bells

In 1744, Abel Rudhall (Rudhall of Gloucester) cast eight bells in Gloucester, England, each with a different ringing (tenor 13 long cwt 3 or 5 pounds (1,545 701 kg) within A). They were built in 1745. One bell bears the inscription, “We are the first ring of bells cast for the British Empire in North America, A.R. 1744.” A1 Water and Mold Removal MA

Crypt

A researcher began investigating the 1,100 remains recovered in 37 tombs in the basement in 2009. The crypt was constructed in 1732 and was in use until 1860. Every tomb was guarded by a wooden or slate door, and many graves were plastered in the 1850s by Boston’s city council guidelines. Among the notable burials are Rev. Timothy Cutler and his wife, buried beneath the altar. In addition, a British Marine Corps Major, John Pitcairn, was interred beneath the altar. He died from injuries sustained during the Battle of Bunker Hill and was buried among other fallen soldiers.
