Mold V.S. Mildew

Mold VS Mildew – Know The Differences

Are you familiar with mold? If not, you could be living with mold in your home right now. Mold is no joke because it can lead to health problems. Mold can be one or multiple colors. It can be green, gray, white, or black. It can also have a mixture of colors, making it even more difficult to determine if it is real.

Mold grows in dark, damp conditions, such as those found in the attic, basement, and crawlspace. The key to reducing the risk of mold growth in your home is proper ventilation. Factors that can lead to mold growth indoors are roofing damage, plumbing leaks, and improperly vented bathroom and kitchen fans.

Mold Or Mildew

Mold and mildew share some of the same characteristics, which is why mildew is often improperly referred to as “mold”. Mold has a flat, fuzzy appearance, while mildew has multicellular filaments that take on a white or yellow hue that eventually turns brown. Mold grows in many different colors, including green, brown, orange, purple, pink, and white.

Mold And Mildew – Know The Biological Differences

Mold relies on organic matter, such as paper, wood, and fabric. Through spores, mold can be sexual or asexual. Mold spores become more dangerous when they are airborne, at which time they can be inhaled into the respiratory tract of humans and pets. Mold is visible to the naked eye, especially when it grows into colonies. Its musty odor makes it much easier to detect indoors.

Mildew grows on produce (potatoes, tomatoes, and oranges) and lentils (green beans). It can also be found on drapes, furniture upholstery, leather surfaces, paper, and wood, such as that found around doors and windows. Mildew will grow on just about any type of surface as long it is located in a high-humidity area. Mildew can also be sexual and asexual.
