The Museum of Fine Arts (commonly shortened as MFA Boston or MFA) is located in Boston, Massachusetts. Regarding public access, the gallery houses the world’s 20th-largest art collection. It has 8,161 works of art and over 450,000 paintings, making it one of the most extensive collections of art in the Americas. With almost 1.2 million visitors each year and the highest number of visitors, it was the 52nd most visited museum in the world in 2019. Ernest Fenollosa, Kakuzo Okakura, William Sturgis Bigelow, and Edward Sylvester Morse founded the collection at the turn of the century. They were all frequent visitors to Japan who were awestruck by the splendor of Japanese art. These artists’ contributions account for roughly 70% of the existing collection. Fine Arts was the first institution in the United States to form a group and name an individual curator of Japanese art in 1890. The library at the Museum of Fine Arts houses 320,000 pieces in total. The first branch of William Morris Hunt’s Memorial Library is named after the famous American artist. It’s off-site in Horticultural Hall, just two stops from the MBTA Green Line.
