In 1765, the Walter Baker Chocolate Factory, the world’s first chocolate factory, was established in Dorchester’s Lower Mills district. First Parish Dorchester (Unitarian Universalist) stands on Meetinghouse Hill, where the first church was established around 1630. This is now the oldest religious organization in modern-day Boston. The James Blake House, built in 1661, is now owned by the Dorchester Historical Society. Dorchester Historical Society is Boston’s oldest house. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the region became a popular residence for Boston’s wealthiest families. The introduction of the streetcar made it possible to get to Boston’s city core. Dorchester became an official part of Boston in 1870. Then, at the turn of the twentieth century, people arrived from Ireland, Poland, Canada, and Italy. Then, around the mid-century, many African Americans left the Jim Crow South.
